eczema

Most common inflammatory skin condition. Symptoms include generalized skin dryness, itch and rash.

What Is The Psychological Impact of Eczema?

  • Comorbid mental health: anxiety, depression, suicidal ideation, ADHD.

  • AD leads to feelings of rejection, stigmatization, and social isolation, and causes sleep disturbances.

  • Associated with high levels of alexithymia (difficulty expressing emotions) and depression, with a prevalence of 56.3% and 56.9% respectively in patients with atopic dermatitis.

  • The association between atopic dermatitis and psychological stress is complex, involving immune pathways and the release of cortisol and other stress hormones.

Psychodermatological Approaches to Treatment of Eczema

  • Psychological interventions, such as autogenic training and cognitive-behavioral treatment, have been found to significantly improve skin condition and reduce the use of topical steroids.

  • Stress management is also crucial, with a combination of psychopharmacology, psychotherapy, and liaison clinics of psychiatry and dermatology recommended.
